In February 2022, the Quechua community in the small village of Ryan Cancha celebrated a sheeping festival during the weekend of Carnivale––a ritual asking mother earth (Pachamama) and the spirits of the mountains for prosperity during the rest of the year. I was invited to attend with my Quechuan guide to photograph and participate. Before the event, the elders and other community members welcomed me with speeches, food, and the sharing of chicha, made of fermented corn.
